Van Eyck Illustrated: Flemish Technique in Painting
May 23rd-25th · 9-4, 9-4, 12-5
During May, artists will have a rare opportunity to learn the traditional methods of painting in the style of the Old Masters. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 23rd through 25th, artist Gary Larson will instruct students in the use of traditional methods of paintings, going back to the masters of the early Renaissance and Jan van Eyck, in particular. He will explain egg tempera painting, oil glazes and the use of powdered pigments. Students will have the opportunity to practice with these methods and create their own masterpiece.
Larson was born in Chicago and moved to Montana in 1977, favoring a healthier environment and a closer connection with nature. He was educated at the Northern Illinois University and earned a BA degree in painting. Artistically, his work leans toward the classical modes of depicting people, following the influences of Jesepe de Ribera, Rembrandt, and the Spanish Masters. He has traveled the world extensively, setting up temporary studios much in the tradition of Winslow Homer and Jusepe de Ribera. Larson has exhibited his work in Chicago, Montmartre in Paris, Versailles near Paris, Quebec, and Ecuador. Larson presently maintains two residences, one in Cushman, Montana, and the other in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
